Wedding Anniversary Gifts

A wedding anniversary is regarded as an annual occasion to rekindle the love that sparked off the union and celebrate it by breaking the regular pattern of daily life.

It all began several hundred years ago in the Germanic regions of Europe when the 25th (silver) and 50th (gold) appear to have started. In those days the husband, or the village, gave the woman a silver garland or a gold wreath for their 25 years or 50 years together.

The traditional list of anniversary gifts emerged in the Victorian Era and wood became a traditional gift for the fifth anniversary in the late nineteenth century. This was especially so in Wales where Love Spoons were hand carved and given.

In 1937 the American Retail Jewellers Association decided to create a comprehensive list of wedding anniversary gifts. The list comprised every year from 1 to 15 and then every 5 years to 60 which was marked by Diamonds.

Many years later a Modern Wedding Anniversary list was devised to encompass the evolving nature of society and populations.

We have decided to stick with the traditional side of the materials although some reference is made to the 10th wedding anniversary where diamonds are the modern equivalent and are easily combined with the traditional tin to make a unique 10th wedding anniversary gift.
