He was a tall and very strong man who wandered the world in search of adventure. Eventually he sought out a Christian hermit who instructed him to spend his life in the service of Christ by helping others. According to legend Offero became a porter and guide, helping people to cross a swift and dangerous stream near the hermit’s dwelling. One day he carried a small child across the stream. The child grew heavier as he crossed the torrent and when they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ bearing the weight of the world. Christ then baptized Offero with water from the stream and Offero took the new name Christopher, which means Christ-bearer.
